This will be a unique opportunity to hear the rarely performed complete Shostakovich string quartets, the first performance of the complete cycle in Chicago. The fifteen Shostakovich string quartets were composed from 1935 to 1974, a period spanning much of the composer’s creative life and many turbulent events in the Soviet Union. The Pacifica Quartet will perform the quartets in approximate order of their composition, offering a perspective on the composer’s full creative arc.
There will be pre-concert talks before each concert, and the Pacifica Quartet concert series will be augmented by free noontime lectures at the University of Chicago on Saturdays preceding concert dates. Other related music, theater, dance, and art events will be presented by Chicago-area organizations as part of the Soviet Arts Experience festival. Details will be provided at a later date.
The Pacifica Quartet’s Shostakovich cycle continues their exploration of the complete string quartets of noted composers, following performances of the Beethoven and Mendelssohn cycles and the ensemble’s widely acclaimed first single-concert performances of Elliott Carter’s complete string quartets.
